The use of electrodialysis in lithium extraction processes provides different variability depending on the feedstock content (conventional electrodialysis, electrodialysis in a special configuration, and in a special configuration with complexation).

In the lithium battery recycling process, the electrodialysis in special configuration is highly recommended. ED acts as a double replacement reaction system and therefore recovers Li2CO3 and also KF, K2SO4.

Special configuration ED is a direct route to carbonate, without the need for hydroxide production and neutralization. Achieving high purity of lithium carbonate. Li yield over 90 %.

Electrodialysis in a special configuration for lithium salts processing is an electro-membrane separation process that uses ion-exchange membranes and electric potential difference as the driving force for the salt ions transportation.

The main objective of the special ED is to convert Li2SO4 from feed solution containing trace amounts of different ions to the commodity Li2CO3.
