Antifreeze recycling

Antifreeze recycling

Ecological and effective solution of used ethylene glycol and propylene glycol disposal

Did you know?

With RALEX® ART you can get more than 90 % of purified product from the waste in the same quality as the virgin glycol product.

Why recycle glycols (antifreeze, HVAC coolants)

What is antifreeze

Our application of antifreeze recycling technology

"We have been using the RALEX® ART technology from MEGA for about 3 years. The advantage of the whole technology is its simple operation and easy maintenance. The output can be used to produce a new antifreeze mixture of the same quality as the virgin glycol product."

Ing. Jan Skolil, Ph.D.
Technical director CLASSIC OIL s.r.o.

What is antifreeze

What is antifreeze

Due to its chemical properties, antifreeze has numerous industrial applications. The low pour point of ethylene glycol/propylene glycol allows its use as an antifreeze in automotive applications, where it is used to protect the engine from freezing and at the same time to protect against corrosion.

It is also used as a de-icing fluid for vehicle windows and for de-icing aircrafts at airports.

Ethylene glycol is also often used in the water circuits of HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) air conditioning systems.

Is antifreeze hazardous waste?

Is antifreeze hazardous waste?

The main chemicals used as antifreeze agents are mono ethylene glycol (MEG), mono propylene glycol (PG) and glycerol. These chemicals are harmful pollutants, therefore stopping discharges from these substances is in the interest of environmental protection.

For this reason, the disposal of antifreeze, HVAC, heat transfer medium and coolant liquids must be regulated.

Also, there is zero economic reuse of such valuable substances. Such economic and environmental reasons (i.e. EU high requirements for recycling of the end-of-life vehicles) strongly support the effort to reuse these antifreeze and HVAC liquids effectively.

How to dispose of antifreeze

How to dispose of antifreeze

MemBrain, the subsidiary of MEGA, has developed a unique technology consisting of effective pretreatment and highly efficient electrodialysis to gain a mixture of water and clean glycols while retaining low energy and chemical consumption. Technology can be applied for car antifreeze and airport de-icing fluids, HVAC, as well as for glycols used for dehydration of natural gas extraction.

RALEX® ART - Antifreeze Reuse Technology

RALEX® ART - Antifreeze Reuse Technology

RALEX® Antifreeze Reuse Technology is a comprehensive solution that integrates pretreatment with desalination phase electrodialysis. The aim is to treat the glycol solutions used and to form a mixture of pure glycol and water for further use in the production of antifreeze fluids.

The technology is intended for the regeneration of antifreeze solutions from automotive, heating and air-conditioning, capacitor electrolyte recycling, and used de-icing solutions of aircraft wastewater.

How does the RALEX® ART work

How does the RALEX® ART work

Ralex® ART consists of practical pretreatment step and highly efficient electrodialysis step to gain a mixture of water and clean glycol while retaining low energy and chemical consumption.

The pretreatment step could contain oil removal, simple filtration, active carbon and coagulation step, and deep filtration. The following step, desalination, is made by electrodialysis technology. Electrodialysis task is removing organic and inorganic salts.

The final product is an aqueous solution of glycols or glycerol with a significantly reduced content of impurities and original additives (conductivity less than 0.3 mS/cm). The purified desalinated glycol can be used as antifreeze again after the additives are added.

Electrodialysis in the glycol separation process

Electrodialysis in the glycol separation process

Electrodialysis is an electrochemical separation process in which ions from the treated liquid are transferred by ion exchange membranes from one solution to another under the influence of DC voltage. The charged components are attracted to the cathode or anode and collected in the concentrate stream.

Electrodialysis technology has been fully developed from membranes to units by company MEGA since 1985. We have over 30 years of experience in industrial and environmental applications of membrane separation.

Recycling of antifreeze by electrodialysis

CLASSIC Oil s.r.o., the largest Czech manufacturer of coolant/antifreeze and heat transfer fluids, has been using the unique RALEX® ART electromembrane technology from MEGA since 2017. It is used to process the glycol solution for its subsequent recycling. Coolants, antifreeze and HVAC fluids are recycled by electrodialysis and can be reused to produce new coolant fluids. At the same time, the innovative nature of the recycling process is more nature friendly, where the glycols saved do not burden the environment and also reduce the amount of waste produced.

In 2019, 100 tons of waste material was recycled thanks to this technology. For every 1,000 litres of waste material, 900 litres of pure product is produced that meets strict ASTM standards.

The project was co-financed by the European Union from the OPPIK program. The complete development and installation of the technology were performed by the subsidiary MemBrain s.r.o.
