Electrodialysis brings benefits in three categories:

  1. Improved product characteristics – lower amount of organic and inorganic ions (organic acids, minerals), improved sensoric properties and thermostability
  2. Wider usage – due to better product characteristics
  3. Processing line – improved efficiency of evaporation, crystallization (by 15–25% for acid whey and 4–6% for sweet whey*), lower spray drying costs by 4–4,5%*, lower CIP chemicals consumption, lower downtimes

For whom electrodialysis is the right solution

Companies with large volumes of feed

The most common way for companies with large feed volumes is a standard processing line using pre-treatment, concentration, crystallization, and spray-drying. Electrodialysis can be implemented after pre-concentration by nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, or evaporation.

Thanks to that, the customer can react to changes in requirements for the quality of whey powder, which means that he can supply demineralized whey powder from demineralization rates of D50 up to D90+, which meets the requirements for baby food products.

Companies with small-medium volumes of feed

The second attitude is more common for small to middle-sized dairy companies, which have around 15-60 tons of natural whey. In order to make the project feasible, it is good to think about how to use the whey internally, avoiding expensive spray drying. Demineralization allows to re-use of whey as a supplement to milk in yogurt and other fermented production.

MEGA ED is a very flexible technology. It can process all types of whey, UF permeates, mother liquor, WPC/WPI, and more.

In one day, it can process multiple types of feeds and obtain different demineralization rates, thanks to the batch system.

We can also achieve a demineralization rate of D90+ with an electrodialysis unit only without the need to use a combination of ED and ion-exchange technology.

Implementation of demineralized products

The most popular usage of sweet whey after ED is baby food, infant milk formulas, and nurse nutrition. Demineralized sweet whey has decreased ash and mineral content. The technological properties and taste are highly improved. It also has high protein content, and therefore is suitable for these products.

Acid whey, compared to sweet whey, has higher mineral content and lower number of proteins. It is much more difficult to demineralize it. With MEGA ED technology, you can lowers the amount of inorganic and organic ions and achieve high rates of demineralization such as D90+, improve sensoric properties and thermostability. You can also demineralized acid whey into products such as chocolate, yoghurts, desserts, and cream cheese.
