Kameničany Farm

Kameničany Farm

Kameničany Farm is located on the western edge of Slovakia and grows tomatoes in the most advanced greenhouses in the country. They were the first farmers in Slovakia to introduce a system of year-round cultivation of fruiting vegetables in a greenhouse without pesticide residues and are the winners of the prestigious Global G.A.P. award.

Kameničany Farm - Customer needs

Customer needs

Kameničany Farm is addressing how to continuously improve the sustainability of its production with respect to resource conservation. A suitable solution was to use its own CO2 source from a CHP unit for its greenhouses. CO2 is essential for increasing the quality and production of the crops grown. A positive aspect of this strategy was also the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and thus the carbon footprint of the farm itself. The decrease in dependence on external suppliers of technical CO2 is also significant.

Kameničany Farm - Challenge

Challenge

The most challenging part of the project was the introduction of technology that enables efficient separation of CO2 from the CHP unit's exhaust gas. It was necessary to provide suitable pre-treatment of the exhaust gas, cooling, moisture removal and subsequent carbon dioxide separation with sufficient concentration.

Kameničany Farm - Our solution

Our solution

MEGA installed a pilot CO2 separation unit in a container design that can process up to 100 m³/h of raw exhaust gas at the 1 MWe cogeneration unit at the Kameničany Farm. The container design ensures high variability in capacity, allowing installation at both smaller and larger sources. It currently produces 250 kg of CO2 per day.

In the case of installation of a commercial unit, our technology can process exhaust gas in capacities from 1 to 10 t CO2 per day, which corresponds to the output of a 100 kWe to 2 MWe cogeneration unit.

Key advantages of the MEGA CO2 separation unit

Results

The pilot unit for CO2 separation was connected to a cogeneration unit burning biogas, which enabled the efficient separation of CO2 and its potential subsequent use in the greenhouses at Kameničany Farm to improve production – by increasing the rate of photosynthesis and biomass production. Simply put, plants mature earlier, and more crops can be harvested annually. Thanks to this technology, the farm can not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also open the door to obtaining carbon-neutral crop certification, which increases its attractiveness to buyers.

CO2 separation - benefits for the client

Benefits for the client

The unit includes analyzers for online monitoring of product and raw material composition, allowing remote control of the entire process. This allows it to operate in automatic mode, significantly reducing operating costs. Another advantage is the easy integration into an already functional production system. Only a connection to the exhaust stack, the sewerage system and the electrical network is required.

Key parameters:

  • Economical use of waste CO2: Independence from the supply of technical carbon dioxide.
  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions: Significant reduction of emissions and achievement of carbon neutrality.
  • Variability and flexibility: The container design allows for installation at different source sizes and capacity adaptation.

Client Experience

Jiří Stodůlka, Managing Director/CEO of Kameničany Farm

"We are very satisfied with the technology from MEGA. Thanks to this process, we can significantly reduce the import of technical CO2, and additionally, we utilize our waste product, carbon dioxide separated from the exhaust gases of our cogeneration unit, for further use. The biggest advantage I see is that by implementing the CO2 capture technology, we can become sellers of carbon-neutral products. This means that our production is not dependent on fossil sources of carbon dioxide.”
